What Is Deep Drop Fishing?
Deep Drop fishing definitely falls under the category of Specialty fishing charters. Deep drop fishing is pretty much extreme bottom fishing, extremely deep bottom fishing that is. Most of the deep dropping around Key West happens south of Key West in the same waters as the offshore fishing occurs. The difference is you fish the bottom. The most common depths are 500 ft to750ft.If you are fishing on the shallower side of the deep drop range you can get away with special conventional reels with a light braided line with high capacity and a high retrieve ratio. Any deeper and you would definitely want to go with electric reels or electric assist reels.

Some of the fish you will encounter are snowy grouper, yellowedge grouper, golden tilefish, blueline tilefish, silky snapper, vermilion snapper, red porgies and a few others. They are all outstanding eating fish. Remember, you are still fishing in the same area as the offshore fishing is done for pelagic species. So, you could have a school of mahi mahi or a wahoo swim right up to the boat while making a deep drop drift.
Only a hand full of guides offer this trip and have the proper equipment to do it. You will need a light tackle / center console boat or an offshore boat for this trip.
